What the job looks like

Most Guard infantrymen spend the year as electricians, students, deputies or warehouse leads, and one weekend a month as a rifle squad. Drill runs on marksmanship, squad battle drills, medical training and the physical standard, packed tight because armory time is short. Annual training is the two weeks where the squad actually lives in the field and works through larger exercises. When the governor calls, that same squad fills sandbags, clears storm debris, checks on stranded families or guards a damaged neighborhood. Federal deployments still happen, and Guard infantry battalions have carried the same missions as their active counterparts.

Skills you learn

Weapons handling is the foundation, from your rifle through machine guns, grenade launchers and the optics that go with them. You learn land navigation, patrolling, communications and combat lifesaver skills that matter as much at a highway wreck as overseas. Squad tactics teach you to move, think and give orders while tired, loud and uncomfortable. The Guard adds domestic response tasks such as search techniques, traffic control and working under a state incident commander. Over several enlistments you also learn to train others, which is how sergeants are actually made.
